Actress, international silver hair model, dancer, queen of confidence, mom-to-be, and Fanola Babe, April has made her grey hair a fashionable, empowering statement and we are here for it! We had the pleasure of getting to chat with April to learn more about her, her career, and how her silver hair has become an empowering and iconic part of her life.
One of the biggest questions we have for you is, we notice you wear so many cool hats: you’re a social media creator, a stylist, a dancer, an actress, a model. How did you get to do all of these exciting professions? How did you start?
So, I will start with burlesque, I think that is where things started in 2005. It was the first time I tried it out when I lived in Philadelphia and I just wanted to do something different. I wanted to just try a thing that I was terrified to do, and, it was life-changing because, I used to be so scared to get on stage, to just be in front of people like that it really opened something up. I could be this character, I could be April Showers. Because of burlesque, I had all of these awesome opportunities and got to meet all these cool people. Burlesque led to me being cast in the film ‘The Love Witch’ by Anna Biller! That opened up so many doors for me and even gave me my SAG eligibility so that I could continue to pursue acting. Over time, because of my silver hair, I evolved more into being the “The Silver Fox”.
What’s your favorite part about creating and sharing on your social media page?
I like creating and sharing because it keeps me motivated to do something for myself and I sometimes learn new things as I go! Also, I’m passionate about sharing products, knowledge, and content with people that might not know about it all otherwise! I only share what I truly care about!
One of the most unique and empowering things about you is your gorgeous silver hair and what it represents for so many women. It must have played a large part in your career evolution and the communities that engage with you on social media, correct?
Absolutely. I feel like when I talk to people that have never seen someone embracing their silver hair and come up to me and ask me about it and they realize it’s real they’ll say, “It's so cool that you do that”. Even in my career, I have had instances where a producer won’t like you if you're not brunette red or blonde, and it's like, well, then I don't want to work with that producer. If someone else wants to do that, you know, that’s great. But, for me, it was so important to not have to change every part of me for a part. Then when people would come up to me, I realized embracing my silver hair was a bigger thing than just me. Everything just started getting so big for me when I finally embraced that and kept that going - I felt like so many more opportunities came my way. It got me to find so many people in this entire community that I didn't even know it had existed. I discovered a world of #silversisters and was amazed at how many there were and to find that support was the coolest.
What are you most excited about when it comes to being a new mom?
So many things, so many emotions that come with this, cause I'm older. My husband and I are older. We've been together for a very long time. We never thought we would have children. We weren’t really sure we wanted them, and then we went to try and we got pregnant, but we lost two pregnancies this year. So it was really hard. That’s why the only thing I'm focused on is holding him, looking at him. I know everything's going to be so hard. It's going to be stressful, but whenever I feel him kick, cause he's been kicking a lot lately, I know it’s going to be okay. I love that feeling. That's my biggest excitement: to connect with this little creature that my husband and I made. Of course, I am also so excited to dress him up in cute little things and wheel him around the neighborhood in his stroller
What is your favorite Fanola product & why?
I have 2 faves! The No Yellow shampoo and the Incredible Foam! Both products together make my silver/grey pop and shine and feel soft and manageable!
What self-care habits have been really valuable for you during this time?
I'm taking a lot of walks. I'll walk my dog, and then I'll put her inside the house and I'll go and have a second walk solo, listen to music on my iPod, breathe and just get out. It’s so exciting to just walk and think that this is going to be my baby’s neighborhood soon. Of course, I have days where sometimes I just want to watch House Hunters to just get my mind off of things, get off of social media for a bit. Sometimes I will just turn my phone over and not look at it, because I just need to breathe a moment. I also have been working on a checklist for getting my home all nested and ready for the baby. I also love having my plants around me!
Have you been doing anything to take care of your hair during these days spent at home?
It took me a while to get to the point where I wanted to do anything for myself. When I finally felt like I needed to treat myself, my go-to was to do conditioning treatments with Fiber Fix as well as leave-in care with Oro Therapy 24K Regenerating Fluid.
Are there any self-care tips or life lessons that you would love to pass down to your son?
I want him to find himself. I want him to feel strong and know that he's enough. Whatever that means for him. Of course, when he's too young to decide, I'm going to do his hair, have fun, we're going to go all out. But as he grows and gets older, I want him to know that he's enough and whatever he wants to do, as long as it doesn't hurt any other person and it brings him joy, I am all for it. More than anything, I hope he finds himself and owns that.
