Fanola Artist Spotlight: Taylor Marsh

Fanola Artist Spotlight: Taylor Marsh

Taylor is one of our amazing Fanola Artists from Newnan, Georgia. Her passion for doing hair began four years ago and since then she has become one of TikTok's most trending hair stylists. Beyond her creativity and love for coloring hair, Taylor has such a positive spirit and love for the outdoors. Our team member Iyanna, had the pleasure of chatting with Taylor and got to learn more about her, her career, and her interests.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Funny,  always laughing, and always positive. Even in the toughest situation, I'm in the back being positive.

What is your favorite activity on a typical day?

Love playing with color. We love going walking. Walking is one of my favorites. Just getting out of the house and go walking and just hanging out with family.

What have you been up to in quarantine?

I’ve actually been working. Georgia opened up, but while we were in quarantine,  I’ve just been watching a whole bunch of hair videos. It's a really good time to educate yourself.

Do you have any hobbies or interests that no one would guess?

I think working is my hobby. I'm always at work, doing hair. That's just what I would rather do.

Were you born and raised in Georgia and what's your favorite thing about your city?

I was born and raised in Georgia, it's a small town. So basically you would know everybody. One thing I learned about being a hairdresser is that you're going to know everybody around here.

What are some must-do activities or sightseeing places in your city that you enjoy doing?

Well, there's a trampoline place. I know I am old, but it's still fun to go in there to that little trampoline spot. We like to go fishing, we love to go to our little pond and go fishing by ourselves. I like to walk around Atlanta to just walk around and shop, it's so much fun. There's so much to see up in Atlanta, you just have to take a day, get your running shoes, and just walk.

On her closeness to her clientele:

That's the biggest thing for me. Every client that sits in my chair automatically becomes family to me. I really believe if you treat your clients like family then you are set because fortunately later on down the road, you and that client, are going to start bonding. So you might as well get them in and treat them like a family from the start!

What is your favorite social media platform and why?

I have to say TikTok because it helps me get noticed, and then people also started seeing my work on there and it really helped me grow. It also helped me grow on other platforms as well. I do recommend other stylists to jump on it, it's a really fun platform to play with. You just gotta take some time to figure it out, but it's actually super fun. Everyone is different and everyone's going to have their own things to share. It's so much fun!

Where do you get your content inspiration from?

Honestly, I just come up with different stuff. What I like to do is listen to all these audios when I go on the for you page and then I'm like, "Wait a minute. I love this sound. I could do this, let's give it a try!"

What started your passion for TikTok?

With Instagram, I couldn't figure out the algorithm and I just couldn't get those people that were interested in what I was doing. So then I switched to TikTok, and then right away people started noticing my work.

When people come to your social media, what do you want others to know about you from it?

I just love to do color. I am crazy about color. I love it. I love it. I love it.

Do clients come in and show you an example of what they want or do they let you have fun with their hair?

There are some clients who will come in and they just let you do your thing. So in a situation like that, I don't go crazy. I'll still ask them questions like, "do you want to a natural color, bright color, or colorful?" I'll just go down the lines and just kind of ask some questions and go from there. If they show me a picture, of course, I have to take the time and explain to them, how that person's hair type may be different than theirs. We can aim towards their goal picture, but I'm going to make it. That’s what I like to do. I also like to explain that I'm not a printer. I can't print out this hair color for you, but we can aim for it and keep trying to get it.

I’m very very honest. And I love to take control a little bit because again, people want these super, super fluent colors, but don't realize their hair is not in that shape yet. So you just have to really educate them as to why they shouldn’t pick a certain color, and if they're still wanting it, just try to educate them on something else, but while still going towards the creative direction they wanted.

On how long she has been doing hair, and what sparked her interest:

I’ve been doing hair for four years. I was actually going to college to sign up for computer class and this girl walked out with these mannequin heads and they were creepy. So, she saw my face and then explained how she did their hair, and then I looked into the classroom and saw it was a salon. So I began talking to her about it. Then my mom kind of told me, "You know, you're always playing with hair and makeup items. You should give it a try", and ever since then, it's the best decision I've ever made. I'm so glad I went with it because every morning I wake up, and I do someone's hair and it's just so much fun. I guess I'm a very artsy person. I love art. I was always in the art classes.

Would you say that hair is a way to express yourself?

I guess you can! I just like having clients come in and just showing them love and doing their hair and making them feel happy about themselves!

What is one thing that you want your clients to gain from an experience during a hair service with you?

I want them to know something that they did not know. That's one of my biggest goals, teach them something they did not know before they came in.

How do you take care of your own hair health?

I've been using Fanola and I love it! The After Color Shampoo and Conditioner and the Nutri Care smell so good. Even when my husband walked by me the other night, he got in trouble because I could smell it in his hair and he knows not to touch it!

Do you have a hair care routine?

I just do the regular basics, the Nutri Care Shampoo and Conditioner. I also started using the Nutri Care serum, I love that serum!

On how she self-cares on her days off:

On my off days, I’m going shopping, honey. That is my therapy! If I'm not shopping that is my time to go spend time with friends.
